It All Started With This Cute Little Face

I was powerless to resist.

I had never had a dog that was going to be this big before. I had no idea what I was getting into, but I had already taken the leap. We were in love the moment we saw him.

My friend handed him to me, and that was it. Hook, line, and sinker.

She had given each puppy in the litter the name of a country music star. His name was Waylon, after Waylon Jennings, who just happens to be one of my husband’s favorite country singers.

The name stuck.

And in those first few weeks, I honestly didn't think very much about just how big this adorable little puppy was going to become.

Then he started growing.

Fast.

And I started worrying.

Was he growing too fast? Not fast enough? Were we feeding him the right food? Was he getting enough? Too much? Were we doing everything we should be doing to help this gorgeous little creature grow into a happy, healthy dog who would be with us for as long as possible?

I truly drove myself crazy.

We didn't know anyone else who had a Great Dane except the couple who had given us Waylon. They were wonderful, but they also had full-time jobs, two children and a farm full of animals. These were busy people, and we certainly didn't want to drive them crazy with our never-ending list of questions.

So we started researching.

And researching.

And researching some more.

We spent countless hours reading through Great Dane Facebook groups, talking with our veterinarian—who is also a friend—and looking for information from reputable veterinary sources, including the American Veterinary Medical Association.

And I quickly discovered another problem:

There was a LOT of information out there.

Figuring out what information we could trust, what applied specifically to Great Danes and giant breeds, and what was simply someone's opinion wasn't always easy.

Then there was the stuff.

Finding a bed big enough for him. A crate that actually fit. Toys he wouldn't destroy almost immediately. Everyday products that weren't designed for a dog half his size.

Waylon came home with us four years ago, and while the pet industry was already booming, there still weren't nearly as many choices made with dogs his size in mind.

Little by little, we figured it out.

We learned what worked, what didn't, what was worth spending money on—and what definitely wasn't.

And somewhere along the way, an idea began to grow right alongside Waylon.
